Although I don't plan to post regularly until late January, I want to acknowledge General Augusto Pinochet's death on Sunday. The dictator, whose name and image is almost inextricably connected to Chile and its identity, was never tried for the human rights violations he committed during his 17th year reign of the country from 1973 until 1990. Under his direction around 3,000 Chileans were killed and more than 30,000 others were detained, tortured, or exiled.
Today Chile is in an nebulous place, lost somewhere between celebration and mourning. I find myself in shock and in thought about his influence and what all his death means for Chile's past and future.
If you have a chance, read Marian's blog (current rotary scholar in Chile)-http://marianinchile.blogspot.com/. She has a really interesting perspective since she is in Concepcion as we speak.
